Sparta is the capital of the municipality of Laconia, also being the commercial and financial centre of the region.
The modern side of the city is built south of the ancient city, close to the river mouth of Evrotas and surrounded by olive trees, fragrant lemon trees, and colourful berry bushes, among many others, as Sparta is filled with evergreen parks, squares and preserved neoclassic buildings, altogether forming a unique mosaic of special visuals and moments. Towards the southwest side of the city, stands mount Taygetos with its grand mountain tops, its wild beauty and impressive presence. A particular feature of the city is that it has been built on the ruins of the renowned ancient Sparta, and has based on the Bavarian architectural plans of 1834, a fact that explains the excellent urban structure of the city lasting through the passing of time.
