Areopoli

According to tradition, Areopoli got its name from Ares, the God of war. It is built in the midst of Mani’s peninsula, staring into the south shores of the Messinian gulf.

The architectural structure of the houses will impress any visitor, with the main building material is stone, while the vertical orientation and the typically very small windows made the houses a safe haven against the enemy in the past. The natural landscape of Areopolis is intriguingly wild and rough, with its steep and imposing rocks; combined with the town’s narrow streets and tall stone towers, all these elements form an intense traditional settlement that is worth visiting.
